Ginseng, a perennial plant belonging to the Araliacae family, is native to Eastern Asia, Siberia and North America. There are several different species including Korean (Panax ginseng), Chinese, American, and Siberian. Ginseng has been used a herbal tonic in the Far East for thousands of years, and more recently has been embraced by Western cultures as a dietary supplement.
The ginseng root contains many beneficial nutrients including flavanoids, antioxidants, amino acids, minerals, and vitamins, being particularly rich in folic acid and niacin. It also contains a unique organic compound known as ginsenoside. Ginsenoside is a saponin of the triterpenoid family and appears to have some beneficial effect on several metabolic pathways. Studies have suggested it is an adaptogen that helps enhance the metabolism’s resistance to stress and fatigue. It appears to be helpful in supporting mental and physical performance, and some studies have indicated it may help enhance libido and sexual performance. It appears to help support the immune system, as well as enhanced protein synthesis, and circulation. Saponins may also support reaching and keeping healthy cholesterol and blood triglyceride levels.
